Abstract

My two favourite chapters were "Igneous intrusions" (chapter 8), which explains the interactions between intrusions and crustal stress, and "Structural effects of gravity" (chapter 9). The discussion of the classification of eruption types (ch. 4) is another informative chapter. "White peak limestone" (chapter 2) and "Limestone country" (chapter 7) were magnets for me - what were the Mississippian environments and where are the reefs? Again, "Underground" (chapter 8) reminded me of forgotten pleasures and is an enticement to return to the Castleton area sometime soon; it is a long time since I searched for blue john around the Odin Mine ("Mineral riches"; chapter 10).
