Abstract

The various adsorbents were prepared separately to evaluate dye adsorption performance of common functional groups containing N or 0 atoms. The adsorption experiments of cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic methyl orange ( MO) were conducted for different products. The results showed that cationic MB dye could only be adsorbed by products containing - COO or - 503, while anionic MO dye can only be adsorbed by products containing - N (CH3)3+. The other functional groups containing N or 0 atoms, including - OH, - CONH2, - NH2, C- 0- C, C=0, R3N, R1 -COO-R2, have no adsorption reaction to dyes. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism has also been confirmed from charge conservation theory and mass transferring process. This study determined that electrostatic attraction is the only adsorption force to dyes, rather than hydrogen bond, which might give an insight to the future development of adsorbents.
