Abstract
- This research examined the impact of environmental tax policies in OECD countries on sustainable development. However, the most important of these is to reduce the damage caused by companies and consumers to the environment. In this regard, secondly, in the research, it has been tried to determine to what extent environmental policies are effective in supporting sustainable development. For this purpose, the period between 1995-2019 was analyzed using the panel data analysis technique. Analysis results showed that there is a positive long-term relationship between environmental taxes and sustainable development. Accordingly, increasing environmental taxes positively affected the sustainable development of OECD countries in the long run. In addition, it has been documented that environmental taxes are highly effective in OECD countries. In this respect, implementation of policies that will support the increase of environmental taxes in OECD countries will also encourage the sustainable development of these countries. Selected control variables were used while examining the relationship between environmental taxes and sustainable development in the study. The impact of investment rates on sustainable development over a long period has been seen to be negative and significant. Increasing fixed capital investments and therefore investment rates also have a positive impact on economic development, which is an important dimension of sustainable development. However, rising investment rates are a serious indicator of the concentration in industrial activity. In particular, the serious rise in industrial activity after the second world war triggered environmental degradation. In addition, as mentioned in the method section, the Sustainable Development Index measures not only the economic and human dimension of development, but also the environmental aspect. In this regard, research findings have shown that the negative impact of increased investment rates on the environment is increasing. Another explanatory variable, the impact of public expenditures on sustainable development in the long term, was found to be positive and significant. The role and size of public spending in economic development in research countries is very important. Therefore, increased public spending has encouraged sustainable development in these countries.
