Abstract

The article examines the play "Tempest" by William Shakespeare, particularly on whether the word used in line 1786 should be 'wife' or 'wise.' Also cited are the move by Nicholas Rowe to emend the line in 1709 to use 'wife,' the analysis by Jeanne Addison Roberts of the editorial history of the work in her 1978 article "'Wife' or 'Wise'--The Tempest l. 1786," and Peter W. M. Blayney's opposition of Roberts' findings.
