During 19th century the Royal Spanish Academy's orthography was made official, the education system was established and the genre of textbooks flourished. These events are directly related to the orthographies for learners published throughout this century which will be studied in this research. The following paper is the result of an analysis of the orthography textbooks written between 1800 and 1857 by authors unaffiliated with the Royal Spanish Academy. But first, an overview of the situation regarding education during this period will be provided, paying special attention to school policies, the Academy, and textbooks of the time.
