The appropriate amount of tannin in the diet can inhibit the excessive degradation of protein in the rumen, improve the absorption and utilization of protein in the intestinal tract, to improve the production performance of ruminants. Tannins can reduce the methane emissions by effecting the active of methanogens. The paper reviews the nutritional properties of tannins and the effect on ruminant production performance and methane emissions, to provide a reference for the application of tannins in ruminant diets.
