Abstract

Cosmopolitanism in the Portuguese-Speaking World: edited by Francisco Bethencourt, Leiden, Brill, 2018, 316 pp., €126.00/$46.00 (cloth) Cosmopolitanism has its origin, Francisco Bethencourt claims, in the sixteenth century, and most famously in the self-definition by Guillaume Postel (1510-81) on the title-page of his book I De la République des Turcs i (1560) it means an ease with different cultures, religions and confessions, based on a talent for languages and opportunities to travel (2). One or two chapters might have been more carefully proof-read (especially chap. 7) for more idiomatic English; the 37 pages of plates accompanying Leoni's contributions are often only S or ¼ page, so that multiple images might have more economically been printed on each page.
