Abstract

The article reports on reactions of African Americans and Latinos against passage of Rocefeller drug laws. Reaction has been mixed among African Americans and Latinos across New York City, New York, to last week's passage in Albany of a bill sharply reforming the current draconian Rockefeller drug laws. Governor George Pataki signed the bill into law Tuesday, restructuring portions of the drug laws widely agreed to be too harsh. Leaders of both houses of the state legislature joined him. The new law eliminates indeterminate sentences and creates a determinate sentencing structure for drug offenders and offers re-sentencing for eligible non-violent drug offenders in prison
