Abstract

In this research, the general pattern of the surface current in front of El-Burullus New Harbour was drawn and its components were established. The analysis is based on hourly data of current speed and direction recorded over six years from January 2003 to December 2008. Results revealed that the surface current speed varied between calm (all years) and 24.7cm/s (2007), with a mean of 5.9cm/s. The dominant direction was E-SE except during 2003 and 2008 when it turned to N-NW. The lowest annual mean speed was 3.7cm/s (2005) and the maximum was 6.8cm/s (2007). 2005 recorded the weakest surface currents, while 2007 recorded the strongest ones. The lowest monthly mean speed was 2.8cm/s (August, 2005) and the maximum was 8.6cm/s (February, 2003). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
