Abstract: The article presents the discussion on the news on gems. Topics include Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy being considered a useful tool in revealing heat treatment of corundum; heating being the most common treatment for improving the color and/or clarity of corundum; and another important and desirable variety being blue spinel especially with a vibrant cobalt blue color.
