Abstract

Endophthalmitis is a sight threatening complication of ocular surgery with 62%-75% of cases associated with cataract surgery.1 Fifty percentage of patients recover 6/12 or better vision whilst 10% only retain 6/240 or worse.2 Effective prophylaxis of postoperative endophthalmitis is therefore an important practice for all ophthalmologists and should require good treatment evidence. There was no evidence of an association between endophthalmitis and chloramphenicol use following cataract surgery and little difference made to final outcomes for patients.
