Abstract

The voseo vós-tu, the use of the pronoun vós to refer to the second person of singular, a form of peculiar and reverent treatment in the lands of the northeast Trás-os-Montes (Portugal), has been disappearing over the last decades. This study analyzes the use of voseo in a border village of the aforementioned geographical region through interviews with people of different age groups. This study concludes that in view of the sociocultural changes and the age of those who occasionally still use this form of treatment (the eldest generation), the voseo of northeast Trás-os-Montes should disappear completely in the short term. This decline leaves the Portuguese language and the Northeast Trás-os-Montes region deprived of another of its overtaken sociolinguistic particularities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
