Abstract

Introduction. Appropriate nutrition status of the patient translates into his well-being and healing process. However, nutritional assessment and management is still a big problem not only for nursing, but for the entire therapeutic team. Patients very often go to the hospital ward with signs of malnutrition, where malnutrition develops and arises especially during hospitalization. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to assess the risk for malnutrition of intensive care patients and postoperative wards. The added value of the study was the evaluation of the suitability of the MUST scale for use in everyday nursing practice. Material and methods. 70 patients treated in the intensive care unit and the postoperative department at the hospital in Gdańsk were examined. The study used a standardized scale of assessing the degree of MUST malnutrition, as well as an original questionnaire to collect sociodemographic and clinical data. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel and the STATISTICA package (version for Windows 13.1). and methods. Results. The research group consisted of 70 patients requiring increasing nursing care and multi-specialist treatment. The most numerous group of patient were men (n = 44, 63%), in the age range from 66 to 85 years old (n = 28, 40%). The longest hospitalization period was 3 to 6 weeks (n = 25, 36%). Self-nutrition was introduced in only 3% of patients. Over 49% (n = 34) of the analyzed patients obtained 2 points on the MUST scale, which indicates a high risk of malnutrition. Conclusions. Patients in the intensive care and postoperative units are classified as patients at high risk of malnutrition. In the assessment with the use of the MUST scale, an important factor in the overall assessment of the patient is the knowledge of the patient's body weight and medical history.
