Abstract

The present study, anchored in the theoretical-analytical principles of the Materialist Discourse Analysis, aims to presente a historical overview of the language policies related to Spanish language teaching in Brazil, conducting a discussion on the discursive functioning of recent legislation regarding this educational practice. We observe the socio-historicalideological effects in the production of these policies, paying particular attention to the recent period of the Brazilian history, from the publication of the Spanish Language Law, in 2005, to the FicaEspanhol (StaySpanish) movement, mobilized from the repeal of the Spanish Language Law by the High School Reform, in 2017. With this text, we point to the effects of the neoliberal discourse in the elaboration of Brazilian language policies, materialized through the erasure of the Spanish language in the main documents that legislate on language teaching in Brazil.
