Abstract

Discusses want of contract arising where there has been a material unauthorized alteration of the negotiable instrument to which the defendant gave his or her signature. General rule that to alter the terms of a negotiable note, bill or check after the defendant's signature was written to it, is to destroy its validity against the one who signed, even in the hands of a bona fide holder for value; Cases in which the alteration changes, or appears to change, the legal effect of the instrument.
