Abstract

Although strict design standards have been developed for robotics, using robots within industrial environments leads to accidents involving operators, sometimes resulting in fatalities. In order to address this situation, this paper proposes a new risk analysis method for robotics based on the Endsley's situation awareness model, and its demons impeding the situation awareness. Categorizing accidents with robots in industrial environments (INRS database) lead to identifying that 3 specific demons are involved in 90% of reported accidents (N=44): "out-of-the-loop", "errant mental model" and "attentional tunneling". A Bayesian network is used to determine risks probabilities. In addition, specific recommendations are made to improve situation awareness and reduce the risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
