Abstract

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis due to hair dyes are becoming increasingly popular, especially among children and adolescents, as well as after receiving a black henna tattoo supposedly harmless due to their temporary nature. CLINICAL CASE: A 20-year-old male presented with an eczematous reaction, consisting of erythema, edema, erythematous plaques, papules and pruritus, which appeared 24 hours after the application of dark hair dye. The patient reported having had contact dermatitis 4 years previously after getting a henna tattoo. He was treated with systemic therapy consisting of corticosteroids and skin care. After a month there was total clearance of skin lesions and resolved without sequelae. CONCLUSIONS: Paraphenylenediamine (PDA) is an aromatic amine with high skin penetration, it is found in hair dyes and black henna tattoos. Allergic contact dermatitis due to PPD can manifest clinically as eczema, urticaria or even angioedema, it can spread to areas beyond. Patching tests should be performed to avoid its future exposure. Patient education and engagement is important to avoid allergens and the contact with cross-reacting allergens products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
