Abstract
- The article reports on the discovery of the brick foundation of one of the oldest African American churches called the First Baptist Church at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia on October 7, 2021. A tornado in 1834 destroyed the structure that was built by free and enslaved people in 1818. Colonial Williamsburg used layers of soil and artifacts including a one-cent coin to locate the foundation. It mentions that majority of Williamsburg residents in the late 18th century were African Americans.
