Abstract
- Objective To observe the changes of gut microbiota in children with drug-resistant epilepsy and to illustrate the relationship between intestinal flora and drug-resistant epilepsy. Methods Children with newly diagnosed epilepsy were grouped into the drug-resistant(seizure reduction ≤50%)group and drug-responsive(seizure reduction> 50%) group according to the effect of anti-epileptic treatment(6 months),and meanwhile, another 25 healthy children were selected as the control group. Stool specimens were collected from all children with epilepsy before and after treatment and from children in the healthy control group, and the microbial composition was analyzed by 16s ribosomal DNA highthroughput sequencing. Results There was a statistically significant difference in the diversity of gut microbiota between the epilepsy group and the control group(P<0. 05). There was a statistically significant difference in the diversity of gut microbiota between the drug-resistant group and the drug-responsive group(P<0. 05). The ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides in the drug-resistant group before treatment was significantly higher than those of the other groups(P<0. 05). Before treatment,we compared the abundance of intestinal bacteria in children between the drug-resistant group and the control group and the drug-responsive group, the abundance of Clostridium and Cronobacter increased, and the abundance of Bacteroides and Bifidobacterium decreased(all P<0. 05). Conclusion Children with drug-resistant epilepsy have intestinal flora imbalance, with increased diversity of intestinal flora and increased rare intestinal flora. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
