Abstract

This paper is the result of an ongoing master's research project, and aims to discuss the role of memes in response to Brazilian fake news shared on the Internet during pandemic times. We selected memes that show recent Brazilian episodes that bring up themes such as the trivialization of the new coronavirus, possible treatments for its cure and a growing online social discontent regarding the way that the Federal Government has been dealing with the pandemic in Brazil. For this analysis, we use the cartographic method to reflect on what the memes posted online during this pandemic narrate, recognizing that they invite us to critically observe the social impacts of a period highlighted by intense political disputes. Researching memes that expose fake Brazilian news means relying on the importance of the Internet to enhance the production and sharing of images-sayings that encourage us to participate in an important cyberactivist movement orchestrated against some government decisions in pandemic times.
