Abstract

The article traces the history of the Model 1816 muskets used during the American Civil War. Topics discussed include the emergence of the model as the firearms with the longest production run, decision of the U.S. Army and local militias to convert the flintlock muskets to percussion during the advent of the percussion cap in the 1830s, and changes made by the company Hewes and Phillips to the barrels of the model.
