Abstract

Although most of the medical terminology used in pathology derives from the regular forms for the formation of words, there are many terms coined from a proper name called eponyms, where mythonyms (medical terms related to Greek, Roman mythology among others) have a special chapter. Although some terms are derived from mythological figures, others are Greek words related to those figures and therefore have a common origin. Although their number is small, the knowledge of these words enriches our teaching of the pathology and the ability to understand how those who initially described a disease interpreted it. This review will cover the terms achantosis, arachnoiditis, cyclopia, eosin, hermaphrodite, Janus kinase, Klotho protein, lymphoma, caput medusae, chimera, sirenomelia, syringoma and triton tumor, terminology widely used today in our daily work as pathologists.
