Abstract

This study aimed to verify the applicability of the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) and Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) instruments through a systematic review. Moreover, to define the evaluated population with the instrument, and to assess the quality of the articles included in the review. The search for papers was conducted by two judges in the PsycARTICLES, Web of Science, Medline and Scopus databases. In total 31 articles were recaptured and analyzed after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. It was noted that the most articles used the scales to assess the intensity of positive and negative symptoms, correlating SANS and SAPS scores with other variables, likewise, to verify the effect of drug and non-drug interventions. Concerning the sample type, most consisted of clinical patients. As regards the quality of articles, it was observed that the minority was published in journals with high impact factor and only seven articles used incidental procedures. Finally, it is concluded that the SANS and SAPS instruments are functional and appropriate tools for the positive and negative symptomatology assessment in several contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
