The article examines the negative effects of prolonged social isolation among older adults in the U.S. Topics discussed include the higher risk of isolation among first-generation immigrants, older adults from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ)-plus community and those in rural areas and from low socioeconomic backgrounds, prevalence of anxiety and depression in older adults living alone, and food insecurity facing older adults in rural areas and below the poverty level.
