Perspective paper: Can machine learning become a universal method of laser photonics?

Abstract

• Application of ML methods in lasers is limited by a number of significant factors. • ML methods is often claimed where simple automation of control is introduced. • It is not clear, what kind of advantages will result from ML technologies in lasers. • Penetration of ML methods is frequently limited by the relatively low level of AI. • Presently, ML is not a universal method of photonics. Machine learning methods are being successfully applied in various domains of human activity, including optics. Can they become a universal instrument capable of improving user aspect of photonic devices? Is their application a necessary element of such improvement? Answers to fundamental questions arising from application of machine learning methods in ultrashort-pulsed lasers are discussed.
