Abstract
- Diagnoses and words used are important. Terminology in autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities is constantly changing in either diagnostic systems or everyday language. There are different pressures for terminological change from clinical, academic and societal perspectives. Clinically, the words are aligning in the 2 major diagnostic systems. This poses dilemmas for those with lived experience as well as professionals as to what words to use and when. An agreed set of words to use for diagnoses will improve understanding, respect and ensure needs are met appropriately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
