The reception of Arnold Schoenberg's works in Vienna before the First World War was staggering. Scandals succeed one another and the atonal music of the avantgarde composer upset the moral, aesthetic and political sensitivity of his time and his culture. By transgressing the laws of tonal music, Schoenberg transgresses the law in the political sense of the term.
