Abstract

The reception of Arnold Schoenberg's works in Vienna before the First World War was staggering. Scandals succeed one another and the atonal music of the avantgarde composer upset the moral, aesthetic and political sensitivity of his time and his culture. By transgressing the laws of tonal music, Schoenberg transgresses the law in the political sense of the term. It was due to an inner necessity that drove him to be not content with established knowledge that Schoenberg was able to mark the history of his style and subvert power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
