Abstract

Social identity is part of a person's self-concept and is built on characteristics associated with certain social categories to which one belongs. Currently, one of the most salient categories of social identity has been the nationality. The present study presents a new measurement of national identification, developed for the Brazilian context. Two studies were carried out. The first concerns the construction of the instrument and the investigation of initial evidence of internal validity. The second study investigated new evidence of internal validity and sought evidence of validity based on relationships with external variables and theoretically correlated with national identity. The results of both studies indicated evidence of construct validity and scale criterion. However, other evidence of validity is still needed to attest to the quality of the National Identification Scale and its actual suitability for use in the Brazilian context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
