Abstract

This article shows the way in which official security agencies in New Zealand have grown and evolved since 1840. It displays a country which has shown itself repeatedly willing to accept the needs for security intelligence agencies and all of their associated relationships. However, successive generations have increasingly placed restraints around them to ensure that the practices and principles that such agencies operate are in accordance with the restraints and standards that New Zealanders value.
