Abstract

Ecofeminism is an approach that reflects on women and nature. According to this approach, which combines the concepts of ecology and feminism, there are parallels in the suppression of women and nature and their instrumentalization. Ecofeminism, which claims that the paradigms of male-dominated culture and economic, scientific, and social structures are at the root of practices that cause ecological problems, argues that these structures also dominate women. According to the ecofeminist approach; these structures and perspectives stem from the dualist intellectual tradition. Ecofeminism, which proposes a holistic and relational alternative thought instead of dichotomies such as men and women, nature-culture, traces ecological problems and oppressive practices against women in the historical and cultural process. Evaluating the perspectives of the periods when women's values were at the forefront is functional in understanding the problems that arise in the context of women and nature and finding solutions to these problems. Ecofeminism, which states that ancient societies where the male-dominated culture was not dominant had practices and approaches towards nature-culture unity, tries to benefit from the intellectual world of these periods. The traces of approaches in this direction will take place in cultural products from mythology to legends. In addition to the positive aspects of judgments about nature and women, the changes and transformations that occur in these judgments can be revealed by interpreting cultural expressions in this direction. In this study, the relationship between home and garbage in Turkish culture has been tried to be evaluated in the light of the approaches of ecofeminist thought. In our study, "garbage" is discussed beyond being just a waste and pollution conceptually. Just like the concepts of "garbage" and "pollution", which are considered as the reflection of ecological problems in the house by expanding its scope, the concept of "house" has also been evaluated in a different context. The main purpose of our study is to try to analyze the themes of women and nature within the scope of these concepts in Turkish culture through the "ecological lens", which is tried to be formed by moving these concepts beyond their daily meanings. In this context, the assumption that the judgment that each being is a value to be respected, such as cults that attribute an intrinsic value to natural beings in the ancient contents of Turkish culture, and the assumption that the holistic structure of the relationship established with ecology in the interaction of culture-nature is encoded in cultural memory as an accumulation is the main determinant for our study. Comparative analysis of past and present perspectives on nature and women makes it possible to interpret how the domination applied to nature and women is revealed in the cultural process. In this study, approaches to nature and women are examined in the Turkish culture by evaluating the cultural codes of a lifestyle in harmony with nature, revealed in practices that are stored in cultural memory and exhibited in certain periods. In this framework, firstly, the approaches of the Ecofeminist theory are described. Then, with the conceptual scheme created by presenting the beliefs and practices of the matriarchal period in Turkish culture, the perspectives towards nature and women, which we think are included in the cultural structure, are interpreted through the views of Ecofeminist thought. With the current examples we have given for this purpose, this paper is an attempt to identify how the symbiotic and animist approaches, which emerged from nature-culture relationality in ancient times determined women's practices and perspectives.
