Abstract

REFERENCES CITED 1 Bailey, F. G. 1958. Bailey's next move was to the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, founded just the year before by Max Gluckman, who had taught at Oxford from 1947 to 1949. In 1964, Bailey founded a new social anthropology department at the University of Sussex. Bailey made use of what Gluckman (2006) called "the method of apt illustration" (p.15), drawing not only from his own fieldwork but also Fredrik Barth's among Swat Pathans, twentieth-century British and French politics, and the infamous "Valachi hearings" to exemplify his broad view of political process.
