Abstract

The article reflects on the implication of the history behind the name of British Columbia. Topics discussed include the reemergence of the original names of territories claimed by foreign power such as the renaming of Queen Charlotte Islands as Haida Gwaii in 2009, violence against Indigenous people perpetrated by the crew of the Columbia Rediviva along the Columbia River under American Captain Robert Gray, and importance of dialogue in determining a new collective identity for the province.
