Abstract

The Turkic states began to have religious sensitivities after the adoption of Islam among the Turks. As one of the medieval Turkish-Islamic states, the Khwarazmshah Empire (1097-1231) applied the Islamic rules from political and social perspectives. Khwarazmshah monarchs were well-educated not only on military, sciences and arts but also on religion. The prevalence of religious discourse was visible on political and military realms in the country dominated by Sunni Islam. Moreover, religious life seemed to prevail on societal realm as well. Religious connotations were also highlighted in the campaigns against the non-Muslims. Concerning the relations with Muslim states, the Khwarazmshahs adopted certain roles including the protection and promotion of religion. The activities of this period were evaluated on the basis of Islamic Principles and these processes were done with fatwas. Khwarazmshahs, like other Turkish-Islamic empires, applied both religious law and traditional law as legal system. The judicial system was implemented via qadis and the qadi al qudat was the highest judicial authority. This study focuses on these religious principles of the Khwarazmshah Empire under the light of the sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
