Abstract

Yahya Akengin is a Hisar poet who has witnessed the progress of Turkish poetry for half a century from his first poetry book İstesen (1969) to these days. Born in Bayburt in 1946, Akengin moved to Ankara in 1971 after Erzurum (1959-1967) and Afyon Sultandagi (1967-1971). Among these geographies, Bayburt and Erzurum have become important places that determine the image of nature in his poetry. In addition to being familiar with the aforementioned climate, longing for childhood and youth also has an effect on this. In his poetry, both the past and nature as the space of the past give the opportunity to get rid of the oppression of the present. The seasons that signify the time of nature and the elements of nature are the mirrors of the relationship of poetic subject with life. While Akengin's melancholic disposition is also determinant in the poetry of nature, his familiarity with rural, his moderate attitude towards city and the adventure of modernization gradually brings him closer to nature. Nature falls into a melancholic atmosphere, especially when the past of the poetic subject is mentioned. On the other hand, nature takes a romantic turn in the poems that emphasize national identity and history. This study aims to reveal how Akengin's life and his way of perceiving the age influence the place of nature in his poetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
