This paper aims to analyze the online transparency of the reference services on the websites of the Romanian university libraries. Investigations have been carried out in order to identify the presence of a webpage dedicated to reference services and an organizational structure encompassing the reference activity, the types of reference services provided and the tools created for remote users. The data collected demonstrate a poor representation of the reference services on these websites and a slow pace of their development in line with the current requirements. The presence of web 2.0 services is also not gratifying, on the most popular social platforms we discover more the university and less the library. We have distinguished a small number of library guides, usually written in text format. In most of cases, they refer to listing steps which might solve a specific situation (creating an account, accessing the library, etc.). This analysis is an opportunity for reflection for the Romanian university libraries that must focus their efforts on reviving and rethinking the reference services, so as to align them with the users' needs and trends encountered internationally.
