Abstract

The article discusses how parents' loans in the U.S. to finance the education of their children can become debt traps. Other topics include the parent PLUS loans underwritten by the federal government, the higher interest rates of the PLUS loans compared to students' loans, and the claim by the Education Department that it considers the loans as instruments of social insurance policy rather than traditional debt.
