Abstract

In his Anthology (Ἀνθολόγιιον) IV. 55, 11, Joannes Stobaeus alludes to the funerary rite of the exposure of corpses to be devoured by dogs in Hyrcania or by vultures in Celtiberia --in the hypothesis that we propose. Stobaeus attributes the information to Diogenes of Sinope, with a clearly moralizing intention. The text has been fully ignored by historiography, and therefore its assessment within the corpus of information referring to this peculiar form of burial in Celtiberia is relevant.
