Abstract

Williamson argues that most of Repton's commissions were for reasonably flat terrain, hence it was difficult to create something picturesque: if Repton had had more commissions for upland regions, he might well have been seen as a picturesque landscape gardener. Williamson concludes that Repton had 'a collection of rules and a coherent method which could be applied in all circumstances ... Repton, for all his ability as an artist, was an intensely cerebral man. Given that Repton was a designer, not an implementer, Williamson is critical of scholars who read too much into the extent to which Repton's designs were implemented. [Extracted from the article]
