Abstract

The actions showed in this paper looked to educate the population about bacterial meningitis and antimicrobial resistance (AR), neurocysticercosis and botulism, as well as to research knowledge about etiology, risk factors, incidence and measures to be taken in such situations. This is a non-probabilistic quantitative cross-sectional, through objective questionnaires, public exhibition of banners and active approach of passers-by with informational leafleting. In 2011, under the theme of AR, we obtained a total of 100 interviews. 74 have already used antibiotics (ATB) at least once and 3 did not know (DNK). Of these, 47 did not have a medical prescription and 23 did not respect the dosage (DNK = 5). 78 believe that the inappropriate use of ATB generates AR (DNK = 13). In 2014, from a total of 63 respondents, 76.2% have never even heard about neurocysticercosis. Only 14.2% of respondents knew how neurocysticercosis is acquired and only 7.9% knew how to recognize the symptoms. In 2015, only 21 respondents answered the questionnaire, from which, when asked if they had already heard about botulism, only 33% answered yes. All the interviewees said that they had never developed botulism and did not know anyone else that had. The activity results made clear the need for intervention at primary prevention level by university extension projects, since there is still much to be publicized and taught the population to reduce the various risk factors and incidence of diseases.
