Abstract

Introduction. Temporal bone tumoral pathology is a relatively rare condition and its approach requires a good knowledge of the diagnostic and treatment methods. Therefore, a review of data from the literature can contribute to improving the management of the squamous cell carcinomas with this location. Methodology. A review of the current literature on the diagnosis and management of squamous cell carcinomas of the temporal bone. Results. Squamous cell carcinomas of the temporal bone are a relatively rare pathology, the tumors originating in the external meatus, in the temporal or extratemporal bone. The symptoms, similar to those of chronic suppurative otitis media, can lead to a delay in diagnosis and to tumor spread. The tumor extension can be evaluated based on imagistic assessment and staged according to the Pittsburgh staging system. The treatment consists in temporal bone resection with parotidectomy and neck dissection. The survival is relatively good for the early stages, while the extensive tumors have a poor prognosis. Conclusions. Squamous cell carcinomas of the temporal bone are a relatively rare pathology. The multidisciplinary approach has managed to improve the rather reserved prognosis of these tumors.
