Abstract

The present study focuses on false friends-words with a similar form but different meanings--in both English and Spanish. Eight pairs of false friends have been analysed, paying special attention to their etymologies and their semantic derivations produced from their common etyma up to their current definitions in each language. The selected terms are some lesser studied forms, due to their less frequent useor to their dealing with a taboo meaning. In addition, with help of etymological dictionaries, these forms are presented from a diachronic perspective, scarcely studied and barely resorted to in language teaching traditionally. Nevertheless, in this paper it is argued that the diachronic approach is the best way to understand these words synchronically and hence it is desirable to avoid their study by heart in form of lists. In the search for a link between both languages, an explanation for the meanings of these words has been found, and with it, a significant method by which to make an easier and more effective acquisition orlearning. Our purpose is that this outline can help those researchers that in the future intend to work in these new alternatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
