Although the process of scientific drawing – if defined in a respectively broad manner – goes back to the beginnings of human culture, it would be problematic to look at scientific drawing as a linearly progressive development. From this perspective, scientific hand drawing would possibly appear as a cultural technique that is past its best and therefore has increasingly lost its importance or is, at least, in a crisis. Instead, this paper proposes the examination of scientific drawing as a variable tool of visualization which is, against the backdrop of changing drawing cultures, constantly reconstituted in different technological, social and ideological circumstances.
