Abstract

The article profiles Joyce A. Stephen, newly appointed deputy police commissioner for community affairs, continues to reap handsome benefits from a career goal she set for herself when she was 12 years old. Stephen recalled how her decision to become a cop was influenced by the 1970s movie series featuring Pam Grier as Foxy Brown, Coffey and Jackie Brown. In the series, Grier played the female version of a super cop going after the criminals. Stephen didn't think at the time she could play the role on television as Grier but could do so in real life and began to chart a course of action. After finishing high school, Stephen immediately matriculated to John Jay College of Criminal Justice and graduated years later with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.
