EDITOR'S NOTE.

The article announces the appointment of Barbara Johnstone as the editor-in-chief of the journal "Language in Society." Professor Johnstone of Carnegie Mellon University has for a number of years been a member of the editorial board of this journal. She will begin receiving manuscripts, books for review, and other communications beginning January 1, 2005. Apart from this, the current editor of the journal extends her thanks to all of the many authors, book reviewers, referees, members of the editorial board, and members of the editorial staff at Cambridge University Press who have helped her during the 5 years of her editorship.
