Abstract
- It is the aim of this article to give an overview on different ocular diseases in sheep. In addition to infectious diseases like infectious Keratoconjunctivitis ("pink eye") many congenital ocular changes in sheep are known. Some of these changes are breed specific, like microphthalmia in Texel sheep, split upper eyelid defect in multi-horned sheep, congenital cataract in Romney sheep, or Achromatopsia in Awassi sheep. Entropion as one of the most common congenital malformations in sheep in general is prevalent in many different breeds. Furthermore, intoxications can lead to ocular changes including blindness. Sheep farming in Germany is very inhomogeneous and characterized by a large breed diversity as well as variance in flock sizes. In veterinary practice sheep often play a subordinary role.
