Abstract

Introduction: total pancreatectomy is an uncommon intervention, with not clearly defined indications and non-standardized postoperative results. Case report: a 37-year-old black male patient with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and chronic gastritis and a habitual drinker who attended in emergency in the Guard Corps due to anepigastric pain while drinking alcoholic beverages was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the "Dr. León Cuervo Rubio" Hospital with the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. His evolution was not favorable, an abdominal ultrasonogram and a multi-slice computerized axial tomography were performed and it was found that the pancreas had increased in all its extension and that there was free liquid in the cavity. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and it was observed that there was free dark liquid and remains of pancreatic tissue. Conclusion: the first case of total pancreatectomy in the province is described, with satisfactory results in its clinical evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
