Abstract

It is necessary to anticipate and to have insight of the internal anatomy relationships before undertaking endodontic therapy. As there is limited information available, the aim of the study is to evaluate the number of root canals present in the mandibular permanent first molars (36,46). A retrospective study was carried out using digital records of 3,785 patients who reported to the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry and the Department of Endodontics from June 2019 to March 2020. A total of 1,618 patients were finally included for the study evaluation. The number of root canals per tooth were observed from the digital records and tabulated on a spreadsheet. The collected data was analysed by computer software SPSS version 21. In the present study, out of a total of 1,618 patients, 892 were males and 726 were females with a mean age of 30.77years. Overall 63% of the permanent mandibular first molars had three root canals, 32.5% had four root canals, 2.5% had two root canals and 2% had five root canals. Within the limits of the study, it was observed that the majority of the permanent mandibular first molars had three canals followed by four, two and five canals. Clinicians should be aware of the complex root canal morphology of mandibular first molars before and during the root canal treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
