Abstract

The article examines how African American voting rights were undermined by the three-word phrase "or other crime" in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Topics discussed include how antislavery Republicans left a loophole that took away African Americans' right to vote, the role of white supremacists in North Carolina in weaponizing the 14th Amendment against African Americans, and how the phrase can be reconstructed.
