Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and emotional-behaviour problems in adolescents. Materials and Methods: The study data were collected in the Gebze district of Kocaeli between February and May 2018. The study population consisted of 23,184 students from secondary schools in the Gebze district. A total of 530 students were selected from six schools using the stratified cluster sampling method. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index (PSQI) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results: In this study, 51.5% of the adolescents were males, and the mean age was 12.07 years. It was determined that 74.5% of the adolescents were normal in terms of emotional-behaviour problems, 14.9% were at the border and 10.6% were abnormal. It was determined that 41.1% of them had a poor sleep quality. A moderate statistically significant positive correlation was found between the adolescents' PSQI total score and SDQ total score (r=0.533, p<0.001). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the PSQI total score and hyperactivity-inattention (r=0.387, <0.001), peer relationship problems (r=0.209, p<0.001), conduct problems (r=0.421, p<0.001) and emotional symptoms subscales (r=0.450, p<0.001). While 3.5% of adolescents with a good sleep quality were abnormal in terms of emotional-behavioural problems, it was determined that 20.6% of adolescents with a poor sleep qualities were abnormal in terms of emotional-behavioural problems and there was a significant difference between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: As the sleep quality of adolescents decreased, emotionalbehaviour problems increased. It was determined that emotionalbehavioural problems were more common in adolescents with a poor sleep quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
