This essay frames a close reading of the fragments in which Manuela, the crazy daughter of the dictator in Ramón del Valle-Inclán's book Tirano Banderas (1926), appears. The disabled body and inheritance are analysed, as I argue that the character can be read as a cultural artifact. Through the study of race and gender as discursive categories of the text, this paper looks at the representation of Manuela and suggests a possible reading of the novel that acknowledges her relevance.
